Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Star Trek: Voyager set up a huge rivalry between two major characters in the pilot episode, but the fight was completely dropped during the rest of season 1. Voyager's pilot, "Caretaker" set up a number of storylines that would carry through the rest of the series, most notably the crew's quest to get back home after becoming stranded in the Delta Quadrant.
One of the most acrimonious relationships in "Caretaker" was between Tom Paris and Chakotay . Paris was the former Starfleet pilot that Captain Janeway recruited to help her track down Chakotay's Maquis ship. Given Tom and Chakotay's history, it wasn't surprising that the two butted heads repeatedly after Chakotay and his crew agreed to work with Janeway.
Why Voyager Dropped Chakotay & Tom Paris' Rivalry Although the loss of Tom Paris and Chakotay's rivalry was disappointing, there may have been an explanation for Star Trek: Voyager's creative time choosing not to pursue it. Apart from the pilot and a few episodes in season 1, Voyager sought to keep the conflict between the Starfleet and former Maquis crew members to a minimum.
Voyager Used Paris & Chakotay Better After Ending Their Feud Luckily, Star Trek: Voyager didn't squander Tom and Chakotay's potential after leaving their feud behind. Dropping any potential plots about their rivalry freed up both characters to have ultimately better storylines over the rest of the series.
