Alexander, son of Worf, has not had an easy life in the Star Trek universe, but at long last he may have found his true calling–and it is a perfect example of a character change. Alexander was front and center in last year’s Day of Blood event, and the miniseries Sons of Star Trek picks his story up and gives him an awesome new destiny in issue four.
Sons of Star Trek #4 is written by Morgan Hampton and drawn by Angel Hernandez. Q Jr, in a bid to teach Alexander, Jake and Nog lessons, puts them into an alternate universe. There, the trio are ensigns for Starfleet, and Alexander is stationed in medical. Working alongside the other medical officers, Alexander realizes this is his calling. Later, after Q Jr returns the three to their regular universe, Alexander reveals the Federation is suspending his sentence–if he practices medicine.
Alexander’s decision to embrace a career in medicine may seem out of character for him at first, yet Sons of Star Trek #4 makes a compelling case for why it makes sense. Pain and heartbreak have been Alexander’s constant companions his whole life. Nog points out to Alexander that Klingons find inflicting pain honorable, and view his career in medicine as “inflicting pain on the pain.” Here, the pain becomes not only that of Alexander’s patients, but the pain he carries inside as well.
Alexander's New Star Trek Destiny Is A Great One Alexander Can Put His Inner Turmoil to Good Use Alexander’s awesome new career path in the Star Trek universe is the perfect example of how a character can progress and grow. Day of Blood left Alexander a blank slate. He was finally confronting his inner demons and his fractured relationship with his father, and it was during this period of self-introspection that he found his destiny: to be a healer.
