The legacy she deserves.

Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT IDW's Star Trek has confirmed the connection between its Ensign Sato, an Andorian, and Ensign Sato from Enterprise, establishing that the comic's Sato is a direct descendant of the original Enterprise crew member. In Star Trek Annual 2023, the two are brought face-to-face, in a manner of speaking, with the use of the holodeck.

Star Trek Annual 2023 – written by Collin Kelly and Jackson Lanzing, with art by Rachael Stott, color by Charlie Kirchoff, lettering by Clayton Cowles – features the USS Theseus, captained by Benjamin Sisko, facing an outbreak of sentient holograms. When the holograms take the form of various characters from throughout Trek history, Andorian Ensign Sato finds herself on the bridge of the Enterprise NX-01 chatting with her human ancestor.

Star Trek Failed Sato--Until Now A linguistics prodigy, Hoshi Sato served a vital role in humanity’s first forays into deep space exploration, helping crack the Klingon language and laying the foundations for the creation of the universal translator, one of the most vital pieces of technology in the Trek universe. Hoshi Sato, like many other characters on Enterprise, was underdeveloped during the show’s four seasons.

Hoshi’s contributions to space exploration cannot be overstated, and yet the show frequently failed to showcase her amazing ability with language. Arguably one of the most pivotal predecessors to the officers of Starfleet, Enterprise undervalued the character during its run. Furthermore, a “blink and miss it” reference in Enterprise’s fourth season episode “In a Mirror Darkly,” revealed that an elderly Hoshi was killed in the infamous Tarsus IV massacre in the 23rd century – a horrible ending for such an unrelentingly heroic character, and another seeming failure on the part of Enterprise. IDW shrewdly corrects this by having Star Trek ongoing's Ensign Lily Sato be Hoshi’s descendant, giving her a long legacy that honors the character in an amazing way.
