Star Trek: Picard co-showrunner Terry Matalas confirms season 2 will use TNG character Q in surprising ways. More than two years after its first season premiered on Paramount+, Star Trek: Picard will return for its sophomore run in March. Season 2 was delayed by the coronavirus pandemic, but with production finally able to get off the ground last year, the wait is almost over.
Guinan isn't the only familiar face turning up in Star Trek: Picard season 2. As has been heavily hyped since the very first teaser last year, omnipotent troublemaker Q returns for more games with Picard. Known for challenging the members of Starfleet in unique ways, Q appears to be the driving force behind Picard season 2's reality-bending premise. However, while his actions might feel reminiscent of the past, this Q story will be surprising one.
“One is Q and his ability to maneuver us through time and space and this very interesting relationship that he has with Picard, one that one might say has always been left unresolved. He’s the first relationship on Star Trek: The Next Generation, really, that Picard had. It was about how you tell a story about Q that’s unexpected, and not the same Loki-esque shenanigans that we are used to. How does it have real dramatic weight? And that was our jumping-off point.
This falls in line with some comments de Lancie made recently, where he hinted Q is more mature in Picard season 2. Having appeared in multiple Star Trek projects beyond The Next Generation, Q's personality is well-known by audiences, as are his tricks. Therefore, in order to make his role in Picard season 2 truly impactful, the team needed to find a way to put a twist on Q's typical antics.
Though Q has been a major part of Picard season 2's promotion, much of his role remains a mystery. It has been confirmed that he'll stick around for the already-ordered season 3, and that he'll share a scene with Riker in the upcoming episodes. Beyond that, his arc promises to be a thrilling surprise that audiences will have to uncover for themselves.
