Star Trek's new god war has upended the universe, as several formerly heroic characters pursue their own agendas. In Star Trek: Defiant 1, Worf and Spock just assembled their own crew, as the two are formally declared enemies of the Federation.

Warning: contains spoilers for Star Trek: Defiant #1!In a shocking move, Star Trek’s Mister Spock has officially been declared an enemy of the Federation. Star Trek: Defiant, the first spinoff from IDW Publishing’s flagship Star Trek title, just launched in a grand fashion, as Worf brings together a ragtag group of 24th-century outlaws and criminals to fight the growing menace of the deicidal Klingon cult known as the Red Path.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY The issue is written by Christopher Cantwell, drawn by Angel Unzueta, colored by Marissa Louise and lettered by Clayton Cowles. The Red Path, a fanatical Klingon cult led by the clone Emperor Kahless, is cutting a path of destruction across the universe, killing its god-like beings; it becomes personal for Worf when his son Alexander joins them. Taking matters into his own hands, Worf leaves the Theseus, crash-landing on a planet in the Romulan Empire.

Spock Has Always Been an Outsider Spock’s newfound renegade status is oddly befitting of him. A Vulcan-Human hybrid, Spock has never been totally at home in either society, and it was this isolation that led him to defy his father and join Starfleet. After a distinguished career, he retired, following in his father’s footsteps and becoming an ambassador.

Spock's Defiance Combines Logic & Morality Despite now being a renegade, Spock remains as moral and logical as ever. He understands the god war’s stakes and knows the Red Path must be stopped, arguing that while Worf is out to save his son, his actions also make total sense as a response to the urgent threat at hand. Star Trek: Defiant is a darker, more ground-level look at this god war, and difficult decisions will have to be made.
