Q’s son, Q Jr, hears Jake’s lamentations and decides to help his “new friend.” He sends Jake, Nog and Alexander to an alternate universe, where Jake is an ensign in Starfleet. In this reality, Jake is a “legacy” officer, the third aboard his ship: the USS Avery.
