This article explores the record set by Chris Pine's Captain Kirk in Star Trek Into Darkness, where he kept his entire crew alive for an unprecedented year. The article delves into the events leading up to this record, the film's chaotic conclusion, and how Kirk's fate differed from that of William Shatner's Kirk in previous films.

Star Trek Into Darkness immediately shattered an impressive Starfleet record held by Captain James T. Kirk (Chris Pine). The film, a sequel to director J.J. Abrams' 2009 Star Trek reboot, continued the adventures of the young Starfleet heroes in an alternate timeline. While Chris Pine's Kirk lived a different life than William Shatner's Kirk, ultimately becoming Captain of the Enterprise years earlier, Star Trek (2009) ended with James T.

Kirk and Commander Spock (Zachary Quinto) leading the Starship Enterprise to victory against Nero (Eric Bana), a genocidal Romulan from the 24th century. For his heroic actions, Kirk was promoted to Captain and given command of the USS Enterprise, relieving the injured former captain, Christopher Pike (Bruce Greenwood). Kirk set the Enterprise on a new mission to explore strange new worlds, and Star Trek Into Darkness picks up the story one year later, in 2259.Kirk's first year as Captain was remarkably uneventful. He didn't even lose a single crew member, not even a 'Redshirt,' between Star Trek (2009) and Star Trek Into Darkness. Star Trek Into Darkness began with Kirk leading a mission to Nibiru, where the Enterprise prevented a volcanic eruption that would have destroyed the planet. The mission nearly cost Spock his life and saw the Enterprise violate Star Trek's Prime Directive by exposing themselves to the primitive people of Nibiru. At Starfleet Command, Admiral Pike reprimanded Kirk for putting his crew in danger, but Kirk proudly declared, 'Except I didn't! You know how many crew members I've lost? Not one! Not one!' This boast highlighted Kirk's impressive record during his first year as captain.Tragically, Star Trek Into Darkness quickly ended Kirk's spotless record. Numerous Enterprise crew members died in the film, some gruesomely flung into space while the starship was in mid-warp and pursued by Admiral Alexander Marcus' (Peter Weller) USS Vengeance. Even Captain James T. Kirk himself met his demise. He sacrificed his life to physically reactivate the Enterprise's warp core, succumbing to radiation poisoning. However, unlike the other personnel lost, Kirk was quickly resurrected by Dr. Leonard McCoy (Karl Urban) using Khan Noonien Singh's (Benedict Cumberbatch) genetically engineered 'super blood'. This marked the only time in a Star Trek movie where Kirk died while commanding the USS Enterprise and was brought back to life. In contrast, William Shatner's Kirk died in Star Trek Generations and his death was permanent. In Star Trek Beyond, Kirk lost more crew members to Krall (Idris Elba) and his Swarm on Altamid, and the Starship Enterprise was destroyed. But for one shining year before Star Trek Into Darkness, Captain Kirk kept his entire Enterprise crew alive
