Tributes for the late, great Nichelle Nichols are pouring in as her StarTrek co-stars and more honor her memory.
Star Trek co-stars, directors, and other public figures pay tribute to the late Nichelle Nichols on social media. Nichols is best known for having played Nyota Uhura in the three seasons of Star Trek: The Original Series, in addition to voicing the character in the 1973 animated series and reprising her roles for six feature films, from The Motion Picture to The Undiscovered Country. Diagnosed with dementia in 2018, the actress retired from public life and stopped convention appearances.
In playing Uhura on Star Trek: The Original Series, Nichols became one of the first Black women to appear in a television series as a major character, which was unprecedented at the time. After the first season, she accepted a role on Broadway and planned to leave the television series, but a conversation with Martin Luther King Jr. convinced her to stay on.
I am so sorry to hear about the passing of Nichelle. She was a beautiful woman & played an admirable character that did so much for redefining social issues both here in the US & throughout the world. I will certainly miss her. Sending my love and condolences to her family. Bill Nichelle was a singular inspiration. She’s the one who really opened my eyes to what Star Trek is and can be.
The tributes featured above are just a few of the thousands of tweets and social media posts that have been posted since Nichols' death was announced. It's a testament to how impactful her portrayal of Uhura was, but also to how much of an impact Nichols made elsewhere. She was a shining example of how onscreen representation can have an incredible real life impact. Star Trek and Nichols changed the face of science fiction television forever, and they brought the Black community an icon.
