Star Trek unveils a new retro uniform design for Captain Kirk in the upcoming series The Last Starship. The series sees Kirk returning to save the Federation in a future where Starfleet is struggling. The new uniform, designed by Adrián Bonilla and featured on covers by Francesco Francavilla and Mike Allred, includes details hinting at rank and potential promotion for Kirk.
Star Trek has revealed a brand-new image of Captain Kirk 's jaw-dropping new Starfleet uniform, as the iconic character returns one last time to rescue a universe in chaos. The redesign is coming as part of new series The Last Starship , which sees Kirk fighting to save the Federation in the distant future.
Star Trek Shares More Details of Captain Kirk's New Retro Costume Fans were stunned recently when Mike Allred's variant cover for Star Trek: The Last Starship #5 revealed an awesome new retro uniform for Kirk. Now, IDW Publishing has revealed Francesco Francavilla's main cover for issue six, offering another look at the new design Francavilla's cover keeps the retro red and white uniform, now with three white stripes on each sleeve rather than a single white band. That's significant, as co-writer Jackson Lanzing has stated, "numbers of stripes have rank significance." Is Kirk set for a major promotion? The Red Uniform Isn't Captain Kirk's Only New Look So far, Kirk has been depicted wearing a yellow version of this uniform as a tactical officer , however after taking control of the U.S.S. Omega, Kirk is already rising through the ranks. It won't be long before Kirk dons the captain's red, but given Starfleet's decline and his legendary status, it's possible he'll find himself in total control of Starfleet by the time of issue 5. Why Is Captain Kirk Back in Star Trek Lore? The Last Starship takes place in a future where a catastrophic event known as the Burn has brought Starfleet to its knees, destroying every active warp core. Into this dark future, Kirk has been revitalized and asked to work alongside the Borg, who are willing to offer Starfleet one transwarp vessel in exchange for access to a top secret facility. It's the Borg themselves whose tech has been able to 'resurrect' Kirk, who returns to a tiny Starfleet overtaken by despair. What Makes Captain Kirk's New Costume So Impressive Kirk's new uniform is a retro sci-fi masterpiece, with writers Collin Kelly and Jackson Lanzing singing its praises. Kelly has revealed that the new look is inspired by the white crew uniforms from Star Trek III: The Search for Spock, calling the new look "hyper clean." And while Kirk looks cool in yellow, there's no denying the impact of his bright red promotion. Kirk has been resurrected not just as a capable Starfleet officer, but as a figure of hope, with the first issue clarifying that Starfleet desperately needs leadership that can envision a new future after the Burn. This new retro costume is the perfect evocation of what Captain Kirk's return signifies in this daring new Star Trek story.
