SPOKANE, WASHINGTON - MARCH 27: Aaliyah Moore #21 of the Texas Longhorns shoots the ball over Francesca Belibi #5 of the Stanford Cardinal during the fourth quarter in the NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament Elite 8 Round at Spokane Veterans Memorial Arena on March 27, 2022 in Spokane, Washington. Just like it did four and a half months ago while crashing Stanford’s national championship celebration at Maples Pavilion, Texas got the Cardinal to play on its terms Sunday night at Spokane Arena.
But Stanford, as champions do, found a way to push itself off the ropes. In a tense battle in the Spokane regional final, the Cardinal defeated Texas 59-50 to advance to next week’s Final Four in Minneapolis. Even as Texas hit a cold patch and Stanford went 6-of-8 over the final six minutes of the second quarter, the Longhorns were right there at halftime, down 30-27. Some iffy shot-making aside, the first half seemed a success for Texas coach Vic Schaefer.
It went to a zone look for a stretch, daring Harmon and the rest to shoot over the top or try their luck attacking the interior with Pac-12 defensive player of the year Cameron Brink, Jones and whatever other towering sentinels Cardinal coach Tara VanDerveer decided to deploy. Neither option bore much fruit
