TODAY'S EDITORIAL: Standing up to China's bullying

THE 'swarming' of Chinese vessels in two areas in the West Philippine Sea looms large ahead of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.'s visit to Beijing early in January. The President's inaugural visit is expected to 'set the tone' of relations between the Philippines and China for the next six years. That mission will never be fully realized unless President Marcos gets a firm guarantee from Chinese leader Xi Jinping to end the incursions of Chinese vessels.

And just about a month ago, another Chinese coast guard ship seized a floating object, believed to be rocket debris, from a Philippine Navy vessel near Pagasa Island. The incidents ramped up after an arbitral court ruling in 2016 was won by the Philippines, which rejected as illegal Beijing's claim that the South China Sea is part of the Chinese realm.China has never recognized the ruling and continues to project a strong presence in the disputed waters.
