Standard Bank Joy of Jazz: 25 years and beyond
Proud South African Tutu Puoane says she still makes music in her native language, despite no longer being based at home.So intrigued was Peter Tladi with discoveries he made when trotting the globe as a serial jazz festival patron and artist manager to legends of the calibre of Hugh Masekela, Sipho “Hotsix” Mabuse, Rebecca Malope and Jonas Gwangwa that he could no longer resist the urge to spearhead a similar venture here at home.
This year, 25 years later, jazz enthusiasts worldwide are putting their party hats on for a Mzansified musical celebration to highlight the festival’s quarter century milestone, at the Sandton Convention Centre on 27 and 28 September.
Chinoamadi asserted: “Politically, the arts were sitting in a very beautiful place. Nobody would even try to push back. As much as our democracy was still very young, our ministers understood very well the work that the artists had done for our country.” Having borrowed from global models, Chinoamadi detailed how, in the past decade especially, international artists have increasingly been the instigators of their own participation, instead of her team approaching them.
Monama walked City Press through how, during the festival’s Newtown days, the students would be afforded the opportunity to share the stage with industry professionals. South African musician Tutu Puoane, who is 45 years old and based in Europe, has played at the festival a few times in the past, but still finds it honourable when Chinoamadi’s team invites her to perform.
