Hercules' greatest feat of strength - towing Manhattan Island back into place - was later torn to shreds by Stan Lee, who pointed out the scene's many logical flaws, and jokingly claimed he was away on business when the comic was published.

The Avengers have done some truly impossible things to save the Marvel Universe, but one particular feat of strength was so impossible that even Stan Lee was moved to call it out. The moment in question comes from Marvel Team-Up #28, and Gerry Conway, Jim Mooney, Vince Colletta, and Bill Mantlo's 'The City Stealers!'

In the issue, Spider-Man and the superstrong Avenger Hercules are both in Manhattan when an impossible earthquake rips through the borough, endangering the populace. The heroes spring into action but are soon captured by the City Stealers - two seemingly robotic beings who are using advanced machinery to take ownership of Manhattan Island.

While the Avengers have done plenty of physically impossible things over their comic history - and Hercules in particular often straddles the line between physical strength and pseudo-magical might - this particular moment was particularly apparent since it dealt with observable facts so many readers were personally familiar with. The issues with Hercules' efforts to restore Manhattan are at least consistent with his character.

While Hercules is a lesser-known Avenger, his stories have found both fun and pathos in exploring how his ancient attitudes and godly arrogance distance him from the modern world. From attacking Peter Parker for dating his wife to taking the Hulk's side in his World War Hulk occupation of New York, Hercules is a hero in the classical sense, often making outsize mistakes that cause as many problems as they solve.

It's suggested Reed Richards will attend to Manhattan's repairs, so it's possible to imagine that the Fantastic Four followed up after the mighty Avenger's efforts, but given the vast majority of Marvel's superheroes call New York home, it's safe to say Hercules' error in replacing Manhattan would have raised some eyebrows - as would his ability to navigate Manhattan Island through the Narrows.
