With state and territory education ministers currently negotiating a new decade-long funding deal, the ABC is launching a series to examine the state and future of our schools.With just weeks to go before the time runs out for negotiations, ministerial conflict seems to be getting worse. If a deal is not struck, the status quo will remain.
But that is not to say the school community does not feel rich with the transformative power of education. "To have to make those choices undermines my absolute belief in public education because we want to close those gaps."The funding wars were supposed to end more than a decade ago with the recommendations from the landmark school review by David Gonski in 2011.
The states and Commonwealth are currently deadlocked over who will pay for that missing 5 per cent as part of a new decade-long funding deal called the Better and Fairer Schools Agreement. "As a proud product of public education in NSW, I know how important it is, and I have offered the NSW government an additional $4.1 billion for their public schools."
Year 11 student Amy Hale is emblematic of the hunger, drive and resourcefulness of the students there.Recognising her passion for food technology, the school signed her up for barista training. She now has a casual job at the local bakery.
