St. Vincent health center will not accept new patients after 8 a.m. on June 30. After that, people needing psychiatric emergency assessment or treatment can be transported to the nearest hospital emergency department, a news release said Thursday.

Stepping into the breech is MetroHealth System, which is preparing to open a new psychiatric emergency department at its MetroHealth Cleveland Heights Behavioral Health Hospital this fall. Since that time, it has been unable to operate a full-fledged psychiatric emergency department because it lacked inpatient beds, St. Vincent said. Up until its closure, the St. Vincent psychiatric emergency unit evaluated patients and, if needed, sent them to other area hospitals to be admitted.The ADAMHS Board funds and monitors mental health and addiction treatment and recovery services for county residents.
The new MetroHealth psychiatric emergency department will be adjacent to MetroHealth’s Cleveland Heights Behavioral Health Hospital, which will allow patients to easily be transferred to the behavioral health hospital for inpatient treatment, MetroHealth said.a year for such conditions as bipolar disorder, depression, addiction, mood disorders and dual diagnosis, or having both mental illness and substance abuse.
