Students from St. Michael's Prep are back home this week after representing the state of Texas at the inaugural United States Governor's Cup FIRST Tech Challeng

Students from St. Michael's Prep are back home this week after representing the state of Texas at the inaugural United StatesFIRST Tech Challenge Team 12928, known as the Lightsaders, received a personal invitation from Governor Greg Abbott in recognition of their sustained excellence and leadership in robotics education.

The invitation capped a season that included four straight TAPPS state championships from 2021 through 2024 and a run to the division finals at the 2024 FIRST World Championship. Coach Mike Scallon says the honor is a tribute to months of hands on work in the robotics lab. Students designed, built, tested, and re-coded their robot through countless late nights and iterative problem solving. Those efforts paid off on the field and now in the nation's capital. William R., a student leader on the Lightsaders, said representing Texas at the Governor's Cup was an incredible honor and a reflection of the team's growth. "Our team has grown so much this season and has shaped who I am as a leader and as an engineer," he said. "We're proud to bring our ideas, innovation, and Texas spirit to D.C." Heidi Sloan, Head of Upper School at St. Michael's Prep, praised the students' dedication and creativity. "Their dedication, creativity, and perseverance exemplify the St. Michael's Prep experience and demonstrate what is possible when students are challenged, supported, and empowered to think boldly," she said. St. Michael's Prep stands out in Central Texas for offering students a high level of competitive robotics experience. The Lightsaders' awards include top-tier innovation, design, and inspire recognitions as well as repeated selection as top alliance partners at regionals and championships. The Governor's Cup invitation highlights the program's role as an ambassador for STEM education. School leaders say the spotlight underscores their commitment to preparing students to lead, build, and innovate in engineering and technology fields. The Lightsaders are already planning next steps for the program and hope their success inspires more students to get involved in robotics and STEM.
