CLEVELAND, Ohio – Citing safety concerns after last week’s shootout near its doors, St. Malachi Catholic Church has suspended its Monday Night Meal, a program that has run for more than 40 years.
“This ministry provides a hearty, sit-down dinner to anyone who walks through the door,” the church’s website says.“Our top priority is ensuring everyone feels safe, including our parishioners, volunteers and community members,” Gurnick said in a statement the Catholic Diocese of Cleveland released. “We will do everything possible to prevent this from happening again, as we have a long history of providing our community with a safe place to eat and receive services.
Russell is charged with felonious assault in the shooting and illegally possessing a weapon with a criminal record involving Thursday’s incident. “Individuals need to take time to address the psychological and spiritual wounds caused by this violent experience,” Gurnick said in the statement. “Additional resources will also be available at the meeting to support those impacted. This is our first step as we address other factors and concerns around safety and security.”at the church. Police accused 38-year-old Vincent Pickett of shooting a man in the abdomen during a church lunch event.
