St. Johns Parks & Recreation and the West Augustine Community Redevelopment Agency are holding a ribbon-cutting for the “Canright House” to commemorate its new location at 10 a.m. The house, which was moved to Collier-Blocker-Puryear Park on North Holmes Boulevard on May 5, was firebombed and shot at during a pivotal time in the civil rights movement. It is going to share the property with the new Florida Black History Museum that is expected to be built there after the state task force. Representatives from the task force are taking a closer look at the new site and plan to wrap up their work on July 1.

The house is where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was scheduled to stay during the Southern Christian Leadership Conference in May 1964 -- until it was vandalized by segregationists.Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. points at a bullet hole in a St. Johns County home in 1964. They originally planned to build it into the design of a new house but were limited by what they could do to the building because of its history. The county then got a grant from the state to relocate the building.

A historic house linked to Martin Luther King was successfully moved to a new location in St. Augustine.
