No. 4 St. John Vianney narrowly defeated No. 5 Southern in a close wrestling match, with the final score being 33-27. The absence of Southern's star wrestler Bryce Manera heavily influenced the outcome, leaving fans and coaches to debate the potential impact of his participation.
In a high school match wrestled with college level skill, No. 4 St. John Vianney needed a pin by three-time state champion Anthony Knox to turn away No. 5 Southern , 33-27, in Holmdel. Southern wrestled without senior Bryce Manera , a third-place finisher in the state tournament last March. Manera did not weigh in. Southern head coach Dan Roy revealed little about why Manera was out of the lineup.
The final result plus the Manera factor will make for interesting discussions around the Shore Conference for a day or two. Southern believes it wins the dual with Manera. St. John Vianney disagrees.“With Bryce at 138, we’d have beat their kid (Abraham Abu-Amoaka),” Roy said. The kid we sent out there (Vincent Esposito) almost beat him,” Roy said. “We think we get bonus there if Bryce is in the lineup.A Manera win, plus bonus would have given a lead going into the final bout which not even Knox would have been able to erase. Even if the match ended tied, Southern would have won on criteria with its three pins. “If they had Manera at 138 it would have created reactive moments for us,” said Vianney head coach Chris Notte. “We would have had moves to make, too.” While we will never know what difference Manera would have made, we do know St. John Vianney was a smidge better across the board. At one point, St. John Vianney had 13 takedowns to only two for Southern. Southern did not scored an offensive point until the sixth bout off the match.“We’re a team and a brotherhood and I think we’re the toughest team around,” said SJV 144-pounder Jake Zaltsman, who was a 5-1 winner at 144 pounds. “It wasn’t our best performance, but everybody did what they needed to do.” A technical fall by Vianney’s Patrick O’Keefe, in the first bout of the match, the 4-3 win by Adu-Amoake and the decision by Zaltsman gave Vianney an 11-0 lead. A 7-2 win by Desmond Lenaghan at 150 made the scored 14-0. “It (132 pounds) was a tough place to start,” Roy sai
