This may be the last real diner in San Francisco.

It was a labor of love for the entire family, too. When Christakes’ children were old enough to count, they took to the cash register. As they got older, they were put to work making the goodies. They accumulated expertise, family recipes, routines and work habits that allowed for the immigrant-run business to survive the 1918 flu pandemic and the Great Depression — no small feat.

The business also started selling food, including beef barley soup, minestrone soup and clam chowder. Sandwiches on thick slices of sourdough were sold for less than $2.50. The first order of business for the new owners, childhood friends in Sacramento who previously worked together at Boogaloos on Valencia Street, was to remodel and repair the place, but only update what needed to be modernized.
