The Social Security Administration is implementing stricter identity verification procedures, requiring millions of recipients to visit local offices in person. The agency cites fraud prevention as the reason for the change.
The Social Security Administration (SSA) is implementing new regulations aimed at curbing fraudulent claims. Starting March 31, 2025, these stricter identity verification procedures will require millions of recipients to visit local agency offices in person rather than verifying their identity over the phone. The SSA announced this change, citing the need to safeguard records and benefits against fraud.
To comply with the new rules, individuals will no longer be able to verify their identity with the SSA over the phone. Those who cannot satisfactorily verify their identity through the agency's 'my Social Security' online service will be obligated to visit an agency field office in person to complete the process. This change applies to both new Social Security applicants and existing beneficiaries who wish to modify their direct deposit information. These new requirements come amidst plans by the SSA to close numerous offices nationwide and lay off thousands of employees. The agency announced they also plan to expedite the processing of direct deposit change requests – both in-person and online – to one business day. Previously, online direct deposit changes were held for 30 days. Earlier this month, the SSA announced it would also revert to a previous policy under the Obama administration regarding overpayment recovery, withholding 100% of benefits for accidental overpayments, reversing the Biden administration's 2024 decision to reduce the default withholding rate to 10%. Over 72.5 million individuals, including retirees and children, receive retirement and disability benefits through the Social Security Administration
