Hundreds of cases of Mr. Bing sriracha chili sauce have been recalled due to concerns about contamination with spoilage organisms.
Mr. Bing Foods Inc., a New York-based company, voluntarily recalled hundreds of cases of its sriracha chili sauce on December 13th due to concerns about potential contamination with spoilage organisms . The affected products were distributed across nine states: Delaware, New Hampshire, New York, New Jersey, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Florida, Michigan, and Texas. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration ( FDA ) subsequently classified the products as a Class II risk on January 17th.
The recalled products include Mr. Bing sriracha chili sauce in both 9 oz and 18 oz volumes, identifiable by UPC codes 850044819072 and 850044819058 respectively. A total of 864 cases of the 9 oz product and 772 cases of the 18 oz product are affected by the recall. The FDA's Class II risk classification signifies that the use or exposure to the potentially contaminated product might lead to temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences, or the probability of serious adverse health consequences is considered low. The recall stems from the presence of spoilage organisms, which encompass various bacteria, molds, and yeasts that can compromise both food quality and safety. While some spoilage organisms cause noticeable changes like off-odors, flavors, or textures, others may remain undetectable yet still pose health risks. The presence of these organisms often indicates a breach in the product's sterility, creating a favorable environment for harmful pathogens to proliferate. For example, inadequate processing during manufacturing could lead to contamination by pathogens like Clostridium botulinum, which causes botulism. The precise source of the potential spoilage organisms in this specific recall remains undisclosed
