In Jacksonville, Florida, Patti Peeples was shocked to find out two women had moved illegally into her home last March.
A squatter saw their plea deal rejected this week in Florida as reports of people illegally occupying homes escalate across the country.Experts told Newsweek the Florida homeowner was able to find resolution quicker than in other states because the Sunshine State has been considerably tougher on squatters as criminals increasingly find ways to stay in properties they don't own without paying rent.
The accused squatter denies damaging the rest of the home, but Judge Taylor said, 'I do not see how probation with conditions, including no victim contact and restitution without more is appropriate here. I think the damage is incredibly significant.'The defendant was given a choice to either go to trial or plead guilty and chose the latter option. Another sentencing hearing was set for later in the month, with a maximum sentence of a year in jail plus restitution available.
