"Squad" member Rep. Ayanna Pressley and Sen. Elizabeth Warren led nearly 90 Democratic members of Congress who are pushing President Joe Biden to"use your authority" to cancel student debt for millions of Americans.
The Supreme Court struck down Biden's plan in a 6-3 decision on June 30. The plan would have canceled up to $20,000 in federal student loans for millions of borrowers, amounting to almost $400 billion. Democrats have criticized the conservative-majority high court for their decisions lately, arguing that right-wing politics influence the rulings.
The Democrats' call for additional student loan relief plans comes ahead of Oct. 1, when the yearlong pause of repayments due to the COVID-19 pandemic is set to expire. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer , who joined Pressley and Warren in Wednesday's letter, warned in a statement on Tuesday that people may try to prevent the SAVE plan.
