After the dismissal of Josh Primo and the loss of Blake Wesley, the Spurs are running low...
Starter Tre Jones is the Spurs’ only true point guard, and with Josh Primo gone and Blake Wesley hurt, the second unit is short on obvious ball handling options. From the moment rookie guard Blake Wesley tore a ligament in his knee Sunday, Zach Collins was ready.
“We’ll figure it out, I guess,” said Collins, who for the record will not be involved in bringing the ball up the floor. “We’ll have to see what happens.” To be fair, the Spurs were short-handed in that game, missing their top two starters in Keldon Johnson and Devin Vassell.“We’ve got enough ball handlers out there when everyone else is healthy,” said center Jakob Poeltl, who committed five of the Spurs’ turnovers against Toronto.
For now, veteran Josh Richardson stands as the most obvious choice to handle the ball for the Spurs’ depleted second unit. “It’s kind of by committee now,” Richardson said. “I know teams will pressure us a lot. It will be a work in progress to start.”The Spurs at least were able to welcome Johnson and Vassell back to the lineup Friday.
“I showed up on game day and had to play that night, and you don’t know anyone,” McDermott said. “It’s kind of the nature of the business.”
