Spurs recall ‘larger than life’ Red McCombs’ impact on franchise
Red McCombs remembers the interaction he had with Lee Iacocca, who at the time was president of Ford Motor Co. concerning an invitation to HemisFair '68, on Wednesday, March 28, 2018.SAN ANTONIO — Members of the Spurs family remembered San Antonio billionaire and franchise patriarch B.J. “Red” McCombs as an iconic Texan whose devotion to the franchise ranked second only to his love for his family.
Gervin fondly remembers how McCombs stood by him during his “down times,” a dark period in the four-time NBA scoring champion’s life stemming from addiction to drugs and alcohol. McCombs had his own struggles with alcohol during his younger years. McCombs took on about one-third of the operating expenses while Drossos lined up additional investors.
Besides Popovich, now the NBA’s all-time winningest coach and a five-time league champion, Brown’s staff included R.C. Buford, who was promoted to Spurs Sports & Entertainment’s CEO in 2019 after twice earning NBA Executive of the Year honors as the team’s general manager. McCombs also frequented the locker room after games at both HemisFair Arena, where the Spurs played from 1973 until they moved to the Alamodome in 1993.
“He brought in Pop and R.C. Buford, that’s pretty damn amazing,” Elliott said of McCombs. “And I think Red was always trying to be at the forefront, hiring Larry Brown, hiring Tark , bringing in John Lucas …Hiring Luke was a brave hire.”
