Spurs notebook: Gregg Popovich calls Hall of Fame bid ‘pretty amazing’
San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich, top, speaks with Spurs forward Keldon Johnson during a timeout in the first half of an NBA basketball game against the Minnesota Timberwolves, Sunday, Oct. 30, 2022, in San Antonio. ORLANDO, Fla. — When Gregg Popovich was growing up in blue-collar East Chicago, Ind., achieving basketball greatness never crossed his mind.
“It’s not something you think about growing up or while you are coaching,” he said before Thursday’s 126-117 loss at New Orleans. “It’s not something you aspire to. It’s out of the realm of possibility. You just sort of do your job. It’s not top of mind, that’s for sure.” “To be nominated for something like that with any group is pretty flattering and pretty amazing,” Popovich said. “Those guys are wonderful that’s for sure.”
But he obviously gave the Hall the green light to include his name as a nominee after Spurs icons Tim Duncan and Manu Ginobili were inducted in recent years and Parker is now on his way to complete the Big Three taking up permanent residence in Springfield, Mass.“I don’t have a say in much of anything. I just carry on,” he said.
