CLEVELAND — The Spurs landed at Cleveland’s Hopkins International Airport on Sunday afternoon. The first thing Malaki Branham did was take a deep breath. In other words, it smelled like home.

“He’s progressing really well,” Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. “For a young guy, he picking up a lot of things.”The footsteps he has tracked most closely belong to the league’s all-time scoring leader. The gym could not literally be described as the House that LeBron built, but the Lakers star did once donate $1 million to renovate it.After Branham’s first practice inside LeBron James Arena, coach Dru Joyce laid down a challenge for the team.“Coach Dru said we play to win state championships,” Branham said. “That’s all we were trying to play for. We weren’t trying to play for no rivalry games or anything. We were trying to hang banners.

He helped lead the Fighting Irish to state championships in 2018 and 2021, scoring 37 points in the second of those two title games. As a senior, Branham was named Ohio’s Mr. Basketball, a title once bestowed on James as well.
