After spending two days unemployed last week, veteran Gorgui Dieng is back with the Spurs on a 10-day deal.
Portland Trail Blazers' Damian Lillard drives against San Antonio Spurs' Gorgui Dieng during the first half of an NBA basketball game, Wednesday, Dec. 14, 2022, in San Antonio. MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The newest Spurs signee was getting up a few final shots near the end of shootaround Monday morning, laughing and goofing and cutting up with teammates more than 10 years his junior.
The Spurs needed roster space to absorb the Celtics’ Noah Vonleh and complete Thursday’s swap. Dieng was let go to facilitate the move. He hasn’t played much, logging only 13 appearances heading into Monday’s contest against the Grizzlies, but fills an important role as a young team’s eldest statesman.“He’s a huge voice,” said guard Josh Richardson, another of the team’s go-to vets. “He’s a guy that talks in the huddle before the game. He’s always giving game to the younger guys.”
The Spurs did not re-sign Dieng after his initial 16-game cameo in silver and black, and he spent the 2021-22 campaign in Atlanta. Dieng, who turns 33 a week from Wednesday, is the oldest player on the Spurs. He is one of only two players north of age 30, along with the 31-year-old Doug McDermott.“Gorgui is a great glue guy, a great locker-room guy,” center Jakob Poeltl said. “Even in situations where he might not be playing, he can take over a huddle and either set the tone or point things out we might be doing wrong. He’s added a lot of value to this team.
