SAN ANTONIO — The Spurs were without three starters. They had lost their previous 11 games, the longest losing streak in Gregg Popovich’s tenure as coach. They had the worst offensive rating in the NBA.The Spurs blasted the Rockets in the second half on Thursday, building a 20-point lead before Rockets coach Stephen Silas cleared his bench with 4 ½ minutes left and nothing that could prevent the Spurs’ 118-109 blowout of the Rockets in AT&T Center.
It did not count. Alperen Sengun, who looked as if he was taking out all sorts of frustration on the defenseless rim, slammed all over Zach Collins but was called for an offensive foul for using his left arm to clear Collins out of the way. The Rockets began the second half active defensively, getting deflections, forcing missed shots. But they suddenly developed a weird determination to treat the 3-point line as if it were the edge of a cliff and they’d fall off if they went too far.
