If the Springboks can go on to claim the Rugby Championship title in 2024, it would represent a historic achievement for many reasons.
One thing is clear, the All Blacks’ hegemony in the Rugby Championship is set for a shake up in 2024, with the Springboks now just a couple of log points away from wrapping up the title.
So, if the Springboks were to successfully secure the Rugby Championship this year, it would be the first time in their history – since the tournament expanded to include Argentina – that they have achieved this feat when the competition was a ‘full’ double round. “Hats off to all the guys for putting us in a position to win two in a row against the All Blacks,” said star hooker Malcolm Marx, who scored the Springboks’ second try late in the match.
Asked what made this Bok team so special and one that appears to be shifting boundaries all the time, Marx said: “As a player, I’m extremely grateful to be part of this side. This generation of players has been a force in world rugby, and to be sitting here is something I cherish every day.”Radio personality Tom London thanked South Africans, including Gayton McKenzie, for helping him after his horrific Helen Joseph Hospital stay.
