“We experienced what is often referred to as a ‘Blowup,’ ” said Hugh Fairfield-Smith, operations section chief of the Upper Colorado River Interagency Fire Management Unit.said that fuels, slope and topography on Monday all aligned where firefighters did not have resources in play and the result was a blowup — rapidly expanding fire. Hot, dry and windy conditions pushed the fire.

Federal officials in Colorado have ordered the deployment of firefighting helicopters and other aircraft to drop red fire retardant slurry ahead of flames, 25 firetrucks and more than 300 firefighters.
