Spring brings Hindu celebrations | Opinion
Ugadi or Yugadi , is derived from the Sanskrit words yuga and adi — “the beginning of a new age.” The legend behind this festival is that Lord Brahma created the universe on Ugadi. It is celebrated predominantly in the southern Indian states of Telangana, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, and in diasporic communities from these regions.
Like most Hindu spring festivals, Ugadi is a time for new beginnings, as the longer and brighter days invigorate and inspire hope for prosperous growth in one’s work, relationships, and spiritual practices. Upcoming dates of celebration are Sunday , March 29, 2025, and March 19, 2026.Many know Lord Rama from the popular epic, Ramayana, which tells the life story of the noble prince named Rama, whom Hindus believe to be an incarnation of the Lord Vishnu and is the embodiment of dharma . On this day, it is common to offer special prayers to Lord Rama, to participate in charitable giving and offer community meals. This year, Ram Navami was celebrated early, on March 30, but you can prepare for future celebrations on April 16, 2024, April 5, 2025, and March 26, 2026.This festival is held almost every year on the same day and is known as the solar new year for some Hindu communities. Many believe that Vaisakhi originated several thousand years ago as Goddess Ganga came to Earth to help rid humanity of its sins. The sacredness of rivers in Hindu communities as well as the honoring of the past year crops make Vaisakhi a long established ancient harvest festival to celebrate the agricultural year and to pray for an abundant crop for the next season.Lord Hanuman is revered for his ability to attain victory against evil and provide protection. On this auspicious day, devotees of Lord Hanuman honor him and ask for his protection and blessings. Some may visit temples to worship him and present religious offerings. People also celebrate him on this day by reciting various devotional hymns and prayers and reading holy scriptures like the Ramayana. Future dates of celebration are April 23, 2024, April 12, 2025, and April 1, 2026.
