An exoskeleton restomod mixing modern Z06 power with 1963 Corvette nostalgia is going under the hammer at Mecum’s Las Vegas event

This custom build started as a 2009 Chevrolet Corvette Z06. It now wears a tubular exoskeleton inspired by the 1963 C2. The unique creation will be auctioned at Mecum Las Vegas. There is no shortage of epic restomods running around today.

In some cases, folks upgrade classic cars with modern components, whiles others perform a body swap by putting an old exterior on a new chassis. What you see here is an entirely different method with a similar-ish outcome. Built by the appropriately named Stripped Down Street Rods, this is a 2009 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 that loosely resembles an example from 1963. The telling detail is the tubes at the rear shaped to emulate the split-window design that the C2 Corvette is best known for. It's far from what we'd call a perfectly faithful recreation, though. More: This Wicked Audi A6 Quattro Exoskeleton Build Is Up For Sale This isn't the first exoskeleton car with a tubular shape on it that we've covered. A few months back, someone put a Dodge Challenger with the same general ethos up for sale. It looked considerably more on point from a dimension and layout standpoint. This car seems to have a few more tubes than it really needs to. Photos Mecum That said, we're happy to report that from inside the cockpit, you can't see the exterior. And you'll enjoy what makes the Z06 so much fun, a ton of power, and a manual gearbox. Under the holy hood lies a 7.0-liter LS7 V8 making a claimed 500 horsepower . The builder has added in a short-throw shifter but otherwise mostly maintained the original Z06 running gear. Notable changes include C2-inspired lighting elements at the front and rear, a MOMO steering wheel, vinyl bucket seats, four-point harnesses, and 19-inch Corvette Centennial Cup wheels. Marine-grade carpet and headliner upholstery ensure that the car won't catch a funky scent if it's ever caught out in the rain. 275-section-width tires from Nitto and a functional traction control button help it maintain traction. It's an odd but no-doubt head-turning automobile. It'll cross the auction block on November 15 at Mecum's Las Vegas event. Considering all of the weird aspects of this car, it's tough to have any clue what it'll go for. What's not in question is how much fun it'll be to drive for the next owner.
