Once preproduction got underway following a pandemic delay, Maher spent about two months perfecting the Vecna concept art, with a weekly Friday check-in with the Duffers where he’d present three or four 3D digital sculptures to the duo and get notes to incorporate, which might include “more blood” or “make him scarier.”
After the work of getting the role came the work of taking the castings and fitting the complex Vecna costume-jigsaw puzzle to Bower’s body. It was a fine line: Hiding that the orderly, where we first see Bower, is Henry and One in the past, and Vecna in the future, while keeping small details, like his gait and some body language—that considering intention—consistent and visible to draw a throughline of the character’s evolution.
“If you want to know the truth of the situation,” Bower admits, “underneath it, all I’m wearing is a thong. It’s all applied directly to the skin, so it makes even the process of removal one that sort of has to be taken quite sensitively. The process itself is an exfoliation.”The final step of the application was covering Bower in a thick coat of glossy lube, giving him a slick, otherworldly sheen.
