Spiderhead ending explained: What's going on in Chris Hemsworth's new Netflix thriller

takes place at the eponymous prison/medical testing facility run by Hemsworth's Steve Abnesti, a scientist who conducts drug trials on prisoners who have consented to the treatment in lieu of serving their sentences in an actual prison. The drugs all have vaguely creative names like Verbulace, a drug that makes you... verbose, you got it.

Meanwhile, the object of Jeff's affection is actually Lizzy , a fellow inmate who works in the kitchen. Jeff is hesitant to tell Lizzy how he feels, and seems to be hung up on his former girlfriend Emma, who was at the party the night of his car crash. To further this, Jeff is brought into another test, but this time on the 'scientist' side of the glass. When he arrives early he spies Mark administering the vials into Steve's 'pack', which sits on a patient's lower back.

Jeff pleads with Steve to call the protocol committee, which he says he will – but instead he goes to the kitchen and has a tense conversation with Lizzy, confirming to her that he knows her crime, but that he hasn't told anyone, specifically Jeff. When Steve returns to the test room, he lies and tells Jeff they wouldn't budge. They administer the Darkenfloxx but the pack malfunctions and, completely high, Heather kills herself.

Meanwhile, Mark goes to Jeff to refill his drug pack and Jeff reveals that he knows Steve is really in charge, and he suspects that the red vial of drug isn't really a placebo, like Mark claims, but the one drug Steve is really invested in. Jeff asks Mark why he works with someone like Steve, Mark replies that he wanted to help people and Jeff says,"You still can.
