The new Spider-Man just learned that as a clone, his memories have been manipulated, placing him firmly in the thrall of the villainous Beyond Corporation. Ben Reilly's contract with the evil group involved removing all traces of his darkest moments.
In the latest issue of Marvel's Amazing Spider-Man, Ben Reilly is told the twisted and unfortunate truth about his own mind and those of every clone like him in the Marvel Universe. Thanks to his existence as a clone of Peter Parker, Ben Reilly was seen as the ideal candidate by the Beyond Corporation to be their new corporately-backed Spider-Man. However, a session with Ben's therapist, Dr.
In recent issues of Amazing Spider-Man, Ben Reilly has discovered much about his employers and their secrets. Not only has he learned more about their ulterior motives, but he's also come to find out the real reason they chose Ben to be their Spider-Man, replacing Peter Parker who's recovering in the hospital due to radiation poisoning .
Apparently, the manipulation of any clone's mind in the Marvel Universe is incredibly dangerous, seeing as how the removal of any copied memory could lead to a total collapse. While this issue explains why Ben's time as the Jackal hadn't been mentioned previously, it doesn't bode well for the future given what Ben knows about the real Beyond Corporation.
Going beyond Ben Reilly's Spider-Man, it certainly seems as though the fragility of the mind is the case for every clone in the Marvel Universe, especially if they were given copied memories as Ben was. His entire life experience prior to his actual creation is based on Peter Parker's. To remove even one could cause a cascading failure and removal of who he's become beyond Peter, something the issue is seemingly hinting at in the issues ahead.
