Dual sequencing of the epigenome and genome could have broad implications in oncology, write James M. George & ArulChinnaiyan NBTNV

. To be clinically relevant, new sequencing methods should be able to identify epigenetic modifications while preserving the high accuracy of genome sequencing. A study inachieves this goal for the physiologically important epigenetic modifications 5-methylcytosine and 5-hydroxymethylcytosine .

Their six-base sequencing method accurately identifies these two modified bases along with the four unmodified DNA bases in a single workflow. The approach has exciting implications for a wide array of applications including clinical sequencing, as the authors demonstrate in a test liquid biopsy from a patient with colon cancer.

All-optical control of high-purity trions in nanoscale waveguide - Nature CommunicationsAll-optical control of high-purity trions in nanoscale waveguide - Nature CommunicationsThe authors induce a nanoscale strain gradient in monolayer MoS2 suspended on a waveguide and take advantage of propagating surface plasmon polaritons to localize hot electrons in the suspended area. They funnel excitons in the waveguide, facilitating all-optical control of exciton-to-trion conversion.
