“This is a digital version,” he said. “As you click through it, you’ll hit the classes. You’ll go through all of them through 2022. It’s as if you are flipping through a magazine; it’s just a digital magazine. Each page is a class.”“This goes way back,” Morris said. “The seeds were set back in February 2012. The Plain Dealer design team was talking about what was on our plates. An editor said, ‘Hey, don’t forget Cleveland will be hosting the Rock Hall inductions.’ So we thought about what to do.
“I thought, ‘What would the band look like at the Rock Hall?’ At the end of the evening, everyone gets up on stage. So I threw out the idea – ‘What if we drew them all?’While it was a monumental undertaking, Morris has always been up to the challenge. It was daunting, to say the least. For performers inducted from 1986 to 2012, he drew 542 individual caricatures. Now he’s at 755. He draws each one digitally in Adobe Illustrator.
“I always draw the inducted performers, not the influencers,” he said, as a way to narrow the project. “I do include some Musical Excellence winners when it seems appropriate, like Judas Priest and Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis this year and Ringo Starr in 2015. But if someone wins the Ahmet Ertegun Award or Early Influence Award, they are usually not included.”
This year’s performer inductees were Eminem, Dolly Parton, Duran Duran, Lionel Richie, Pat Benatar & Neil Giraldo, Eurythmics and Carly Simon.“The kind of guitar Elvis Presley held is the kind he really played,” he said. “I want music people to look at it and not say, ‘Well, Angus Young didn’t play that style of guitar.’ I try to capture their expression as well as their accurate instruments.”
