Smoke has blanketed Bay Area cities' skies for much of the week, as wildfires continue to burn at the Oregon-California border.
Over the last decade, Bay Area air quality has worsened as summer transitions into fall. Dramatic increases in particulate matter, the most concerning pollutant from wildfire smoke, has correlated closely with big blazes. August matches deadliest month for SF overdoses since 2020 The City is on pace for 844 overdose deaths this year, about 120 more than the previous record set in 2020
The Smith River Complex, the largest of about a half-dozen wildfires burning in Northern California, had burned nearly 94,000 acres as of Thursday morning. It was 76% contained.
