DAVID MUNDEE Led by two state titles by Alec Spann, the Abbeville boys track and field team made a run at a state title, while the Providence Christian boys team had three winners, including a record-setting 4x800 relay squad, during this past weekend’s AHSAA State Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
The Abbeville and Providence Christian boys had the highest teams finishes with the Yellow Jackets finishing third in Class 2A and the Eagles fifth in Class 3A. The Providence Christian girls had the next highest finish, placing eighth in 3A. The three programs highlighted the efforts by Wiregrass high school track and field athletes that produced 86 top eight finishes, including nine championship performances. The Class 1A, 2A and 3A state meets were held Friday and Saturday at Cullman High School in Cullman, while the Class 4A, 5A, 6A and 7A meets were Thursday through Saturday at the Gulf Shores Sportsplex in Gulf Shores. People are also reading… Spann, Smith lead AbbevilleSpann, a junior, won the Class 2A 300-meter hurdles race and the long jump competition. He ran a time of 40.12 seconds in the hurdle event and leapt 21 feet 5 ¼ inches in the long jump. Spann nearly won a third event, finishing as the runner-up in 110-meter hurdles in 15.48 seconds, finishing close behind Aliceville’s Javien McGraw’s 15.32 time. He was also on a second-place relay. Spann wasn’t the only Abbeville standout, though, as the Jackets had nine top seven performances, including a relay, at the meet. Behind the top efforts, Abbeville made a charge for the 2A state title but fell short in a three-way battle at the top. Abbeville finished with 52 points, just three points behind champion Loachapoka and one point behind runner-up Mars Hill Bible . The Jackets’ 4x100 relay team of Spann, Ahmod Billins, Jamarion Smith and Kendrick Carter Jr., finished in second place with a time of 44.55 seconds, while Smith had three top six finishes, taking fifth in the 100 meters in 11.25 seconds, fifth in 200 meters with a 23.26 time and sixth in the long jump with a leap of 19’8”. Aloyd Knight placed sixth in the high jump for Abbeville with a 5’8” leap and Carter captured seventh in the 200 meters in 23.37 seconds. Record relay team paces PCS boysProvidence Christian also had a strong meet, earning a fifth-place finish in Class 3A boys with 50 points. The Eagles’ performance was highlighted by the 4x800-meter relay team, which blazed to an AHSAA Class 3A state record time of 8 minutes and 16.62 seconds, breaking the previous mark set by UMS-Wright in the 1996 state championship. Members of the PCS relay were Kyser Sims, William Stanley, Jacob Mixson and Cole Smith. Smith also earned a state title in 800-meter run, finishing with a 1:58.40 time. The North Alabama signee also placed second in the 1600-meter run in 4:28.10. Providence Christian’s 4x400-relay team of Colson Love, Smith, Mixson and Sims also earned gold at the state meet, claiming a winning time of 3:33.82. Stanley and Mixson also combined for three other top finishes. Stanley was fifth in the 1600 with a 9:47.86 time and seventh in the 1600 with 4:36.49 time. Mixson was not far behind Smith the 800, just two spots back in third with 2:01.71 time. Charles Henderson’s Ousley wins twiceCharles Henderson girls runner Payton Ousley won a pair of state titles in Class 5A in Gulf Shores. Ousley, a junior, won both the 100 and 200-meter races. She took the 100 in 12.16 seconds and the 200 in 24.92. Three others win state titleTwo other girls Wiregrass athletes and one boy won individual state titles during this past weekend. The two other girls claiming state titles were Enterprise’s Jamesha Howard and Barbour County’s Anesia Eutsey and the other boys winning was Eufaula’s Keviyon Lamons. Enterprise’s Howard won the Class 7A high jump competition with a jump of 5 feet, 4 inches.
