Mikel Merino found the back of the net with a header in the 119th minute to lift Spain past Germany with a 2-1 win. The contest was as physical and evenly played as most expected between the two international powers, but it was Spain with the final say after Germany forced extra time with a late goal. France survived penalty kicks to advance past Portugal in the quarterfinal round. The two sides played through regulation and extra time without a goal being scored, then France converted all five of its penalty chances to win, 5-3.
