SpaceX livestream showed the violence of reentry from space, UTSA aeronautical engineering professor says.

SpaceX’s livestream of Starship ’s fourth flight — including a stunning real-time view of its fiery hypersonic reentry to Earth ’s atmosphere — provided images unlike any ever seen. They were just what aerospace engineer Chris Combs tuned in hoping to see. “It was a really incredible visual of how violent that reentry process is,” said Combs, a University of Texas at San Antonio professor who studies hypersonics — travel at speeds exceeding 4,000 mph.

Rocket Cargo: The Pentagon’s growing interest in SpaceX’s Starship “It was remarkable that the flap held together for as long as it did,” Combs said. “I thought that because of the damage that happened to the flap would immediately start to tumble once it got deeper into the atmosphere and it seems like it didn’t. That was impressive.” He said he was also impressed with the booster’s earlier soft landing in the Gulf of Mexico — but not surprised.
