A SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket is scheduled to launch two lunar landers, Blue Ghost by Firefly Aerospace and Hakuto-R by Ispace, towards the moon. This launch marks a significant milestone in the renewed race to establish a long-term human presence on the lunar surface, with several missions planned for the year. Both landers will embark on different trajectories to reach the moon, with Blue Ghost aiming for a landing near Mons Latreille, a volcanic feature on the lunar surface.

A SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket is set to launch a pair of lunar landers on a journey to our closest celestial neighbor — kicking off what’s expected to be a bustling year of moon missions amid a renewed race to establish a long-term human presence on the lunar surface. The SpaceX rocket is on track to lift off as soon as 1:11 a.m. ET Wednesday from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The federal agency will begin a livestream of the event on its website about 40 minutes prior to the launch.

“Almost everything performed perfectly — propulsion system, communication system, and also structure,” Nozaki said of the first Hakuto-R mission. “The issue was the software and the altitude measurement has some issue.” A NASA spacecraft captured an image of the impact crater created during the crash landing.
