SpaceX's Starship completed its eleventh test flight on October 13, marking the second straight successful flight for the program. The suborbital test achieved all major objectives, with both the Super Heavy booster and the Ship upper stage successfully splashing down. This flight provided valuable data for the next generation of Starship and Super Heavy.
SpaceX’s massive Starship rocket successfully completed its 11th test flight on October 13. This marks the second straight success for the program. The suborbital test was the final launch for the current version 2 of the vehicle, which is about 403 feet tall.
The giant rocket launched from the Starbase site in South Texas. The test flight repeated the achievements of the previous Flight 10 in August. Both the Super Heavy booster and the Ship upper stage splashed down successfully in the Gulf of Mexico and the Indian Ocean, respectively.“Every major objective of the flight test was achieved, providing valuable data as we prepare the next generation of Starship and Super Heavy,” the SpaceX statement revealed on October 13. This was followed by a hot-staging maneuver, where the Starship upper stage ignited its six Raptor engines to continue its ascent into space. After separating, the Super Heavy performed a boostback burn to guide it toward a pre-planned splashdown zone off the coast of Texas.Furthermore, the flight saw Starship demonstrate a capability for future deorbit burns. It successfully relit a Raptor engine in space for the third time and deployed eight Starlink dummy payloads.Focus shifts to future variantsStarship is central to CEO Musk’s long-term vision of a human settlement in Mars. NASA also chose it to be the first crewed lander for the Artemis 3 mission , which aims to return humans to the Moon.Despite recent back-to-back successes, the program faced setbacks earlier in the year, including three straight failed tests where the upper stage was lost prematurely.Space.com stated that the future Starship variants will surpass the 403-feet height of the current Version 2.The upcoming Version 3 is expected to be approximately 408 feet tall. An even more ambitious variant, the “Future Starship” , was teased by Musk and is anticipated to debut in 2027. This rocket will reach a height of 466 feet and increase its propulsion system to 42 Raptor engines, three more than the V2 and V3 versions. These three additional engines will be placed on the upper stage, Ship, bringing its engine count to nine.SpaceX is now preparing the next iteration for orbital flights and operational missions.“Focus now turns to the next generation of Starship and Super Heavy, with multiple vehicles currently in active build and preparing for tests,” SpaceX noted.“This next iteration will be used for the first Starship orbital flights, operational payload missions, propellant transfer, and more as we iterate to a fully and rapidly reusable vehicle with service to Earth orbit, the Moon, Mars, and beyond,” it added. Musk watched the Starship Flight 11 launch in person on Monday evening, noting it was the first time he had watched a launch outside of launch control. He termed the experience “much more visceral.”
