SpaceX's Starbase name change in fed review limbo as Bureau of Geographic Names reviews
SpaceX’s South Texas rocket facility known as Starbase isn’t officially Starbase , Texas. Yet. More than three and a half years after CEO Elon Musk pitched the idea of renaming the area around the commercial space company’s headquarters, Starship factory and launch site, the proposed title is still just a nickname while state and federal agencies review the case. Earlier this year, after a flurry of support from area city governments, Cameron County applied to the U.S.
In most successful Starship test flight yet, SpaceX lands massive booster at South Texas Starbase There’s a big snag: The bureau, a part of the U.S. Geological Survey, says it will not consider proposals “connected to a commercial product or enterprise.” That creates a big problem for Starbase, Texas — which is part of Musk’s vision for a SpaceX company town. For now, the request is in limbo as the bureau consults with the U.S.
Elon Musk’s SpaceX slams FAA in letter to Ted Cruz and other lawmakers In February, Cameron County commissioners voted to move forward with the application and, in May, submitted the request to the Bureau of Geographic Names. It included endorsements from U.S. Rep. Vicente Gonzales of McAllen, Harlingen Mayor Norma Sepulveda and South Padre Island’s City Council and Mayor Patrick McNulty. At least two area chambers of commerce also backed the proposal.
Environmental groups ask feds to halt Starship launches from SpaceX’s South Texas Starbase “The colonization process has been going on for 500 years here in Texas,” he said. “One of the things they’ve done is continue to try to change the names of places.” Outside entities come in and justify their actions “by saying ‘I don’t have any connection to the land,’ and you’re not a recognized tribe, so I can do whatever I want,” he said.
Could Starbase, Texas, soon be official? SpaceX’s Boca Chica renaming project is gaining momentum. That means the soonest Kopernik Shores could become Starbase is sometime in 2025. If the Bureau of Geographic Names denies the request, the county said it’s not looking at other ways to change the name. County records show county staff members have looked for alternatives, though. Lopez sent an email to a colleague in May asking if they’d considered creating a “Census Designated Place” under the U.
