A SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket is set to send NASA's Psyche probe to a rendezvous with an asteroid on Thursday.

SpaceX is bringing out the big rockets for NASA on Thursday. The payload launched will be traveling across the solar system.

It takes more oomph to send things that far into space. A Falcon Heavy has five million pounds of thrust. A regular Falcon 9 has about 1.7 million pounds of thrust. NASA says the Psyche probe and mission will help scientists understand the makeup of the asteroid, which has a high metal content, hopefully answering “fundamental questions about Earth’s own metal core and the formation of our solar system.”

Newsletter Sign-up SpaceX launches don’t have direct implications for investors. It’s privately held. Still, SpaceX has completely remade the commercial space industry by lowering costs to reach space enabling new space-based business models.
