"Animals, including humans, rely on our microbes to maintain a healthy digestive and immune system," UMAMI principal investigator Jamie Foster said in a statement."We do not fully understand how spaceflight alters these beneficial interactions." The experiment could help support the development of protective measures for the health of astronauts on long-duration space missions, according to NASA, and lead to a better understanding of the complex interactions between animals and beneficial microbes.
Researchers are also looking at how different environmental conditions could affect tardigrade gene expression. These immature bobtail squid are part of UMAMI, an investigation that examines whether space alters the symbiotic relationship between the squid and the bacterium Vibrio fischeri.
