SpaceX is providing Ukraine with an additional 2,500 Starshield-enabled terminals, enhancing its secure satellite communication capabilities amidst Russia's ongoing attacks.

SpaceX is expanding Ukraine 's access to secure satellite communications through Starshield , an encrypted service of its Starlink satellite internet system. Under a Pentagon contract, 2,500 existing Starlink terminals will gain internet access via Starshield , a service SpaceX is developing for government clients. This adds to Ukraine 's existing 500 Starshield -enabled terminals, bringing the total to 3,000 for use in its defense against Russia .

Encrypted communication is just one feature of SpaceX's expanding Starshield business. Ukraine is using it to maintain communication despite Russian hacking and jamming attacks targeting traditional Starlink systems. This increased Starshield access deepens SpaceX's involvement in the conflict, despite CEO Elon Musk's mixed stance on Ukraine's defense. It also highlights the growing complexity of Musk's business dealings since supporting Donald Trump's reelection this year. Musk made a surprise appearance on a November phone call between President-elect Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, where Zelenskyy thanked Musk for Starlink service and Musk promised continued support. The eight-month Starshield service contract started in August and runs through April, according to a Space Force spokesperson. The value of the contract was not disclosed by the Space Systems Command, but they emphasized that this version of Starshield is not a militarized version of Starlink satellites, but a negotiated service plan aligned for military use
