The space agency is tracking SpaceX test flights as part of its Artemis moon program.

For more than a year, SpaceX founder and CEO Elon Musk has set multiple target launch dates only to postpone them as the company awaited federal approval of an environmental review considering the possible impacts of the launch, debris and road closures in and around Boca Chica. The review period was extended after the federal government received more than 17,000 written comments it had to sort through.
The Federal Aviation Administration in June concluded the review but required SpaceX to take more than 75 actions to mitigate impacts before issuing the operator license needed to launch. It has not yet granted the license for the mission, a potential wrench in plans for a December launch, and the status of SpaceX’s progress on the required actions was unclear Monday.
In the meantime, SpaceX has been conducting static fire tests on the launch pad at Starbase and has said it will continue testing its boosters there, though Musk said recently it might eventually shift launch operations to Florida. SpaceX began test launching Starship prototypes 6 miles into the skies above Boca Chica in 2019. After a series of failures — including an explosion that sent chunks of steel across area marshlands — the company had its first successful launch and landing in May 2021.
